Heart of the Race - Mary Calmes A slow-burn, high-revving, friends to lovers story.Varro , the adrenaline junkie with a penchant for speed and his sidekick, Brian have grown up together. One leading the charge and the other spectating the miraculous and disastrous deeds. One footloose and the other just wanting to lay down roots. One in love and the other not.Torn apart. Brian is tired of playing second fiddle and moves on with his life--doing what he wants, but leaving behind the one thing he desperately wants. It is terribly romantic and just enough angst to keep you turning the pages. The emotions pinging back and forth between Varro and Brian like some sort of demonic table tennis match is enthralling. Even though Gay For You themes are not my favorite, I still liked this--a lot. Sure, at times I felt like the author was recklessly twanging heartstrings, but somehow I was caught up enough in the characters. Of course, the fact that Varro is a daredevil and has ungodly amounts of injuries did appeal to me and probably kept this from seeming too sweet. Favorite quote:“Because you belong to me, Brian, make no mistake. You always have.”~~ A copy was provided to me for a No Glitter Blown review~~Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews
